Chainsaw & associated training courses

Chain saw

Looking after the environment is becoming ever more important in the current climate. Trees need regular inspection to ensure their health and longevity and if work needs done it should be carried out by a trained person. Due to the limited forestry in our area the group only offers the basic cross cutting and maintenance course. If you are interested in advanced skills such as felling, places can be found with other members of ART. All those using a brushcutter/strimmer or hand held hedge cutter should also receive appropriate training.

Please note that anyone handling a chainsaw should have attended an emergency first aid course.

Courses outlined on this page include:

Basic tree survey & inspection

This course has recently been created following high profile court cases where death has resulted from fallen trees whose visible defects meant problems could have been foreseen. The aim is to train non-arboricultural staff to identify obvious defects from the ground & report the need for a more competent inspection by a trained professional.

  • Legal & safety implications of hazardous trees
  • Maintain your own safety while carrying out a basic tree survey
  • Recognise hazardous trees
  • Determine risk level
  • Decide on appropriate action
  • Collect & maintain adequate information
  • Recognise own limitations
