Farm assurance schemes have reinforced the need, already recognised by employers, to have a fully documented approach to health and safety in a modern business. These courses combine practical training for staff, to ensure safe workplaces and working practises, with technical and legislative updates to keep everyone on the right side of the law.

Emergency first aid
This is a half day course which can be arranged on your site. It is advised that all staff attend this at least every five years.
- Incident Management
- Primary survey and management of unconscious casualty
- Recovery position
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with the use of face shields
- Treatment for shock
- Severe bleeding & bandaging/slings
- Treatment for burns

First aid at work
This four day course gives the knowledge and confidence to deal with a First Aid emergency in the workplace. After completeing a final assessment an HSE approved certificate is awarded which is valid for three years. A two day course updating theses skills is then required before the expiry date shown on the certificate.

Food hygiene for farm staff
This course was developed to meet the requirement of the Tesco Natures Choice audit technical guidelines 4.15 which asks that 'in all crop harvesting operations is there a person in each harvest team who has training in basic food hygiene.'
It is a half day course at the end of which there is a multiple choice test. A training group certificate is issued which is accepted by the auditors as proof that section 4.15 has been met.

Fire prevention
This course will aid fire safety in the workplace and enable staff to meet the requirements of the Regulatory Reform Order(Fire Safety) 2005 which was implemented in 2006.
- Raise awarenes and illustrate the damage and loss caused by fire
- Hazard spotting in the workplace and how to avoid the causes of fire
- Action in the event of fire: how to raise the alarm, improve evacuations and communication with the fire service
- Effective and safe use of fire extinguishers; demonstration and practise with various types; knowing the correct extinguisher for the job

Health & safety awareness for farm staff
Employers are responsible for providing a safe work environment, but employees also need training in the basics of health and safety as well as training for specific tasks. The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health certificate is a one day programme which is followed by a multiple choice exam at the end of the day. While this is a generic course covering all workplaces, the instructor has adapted his course material for the Training Group to use examples which focus on agriculture making it both relevant and of interest to farm staff.

Wild game meat hygiene
Since 1 January 2006 anyone supplying game meat to a game dealer must be a 'trained person'. The level 2 certificate in wild game meat hygiene meets the requirement of this legislation. The course takes one day and at the end of it an exam is taken which comprises a mandatory core unit and either or both of the following units: large game, covering deer and small game, covering pheasants, hares etc

Abnormal behaviour and pathological changes due to disease, environmental contamination or other factors that may affect human health

Hygiene rules and proper techniques for handling dead game in order to reduce the risk to human health

Working at heights awareness
The work at height regulations 2005 apply to all work at height where there is a risk of a fall liable to cause personal injury. They place duties on employers, the self employed and any person that controls the work of others.
Duty holders must ensure
- All work at height is properly planned & organised
- Those involved are compotent
- The risks from work at height are assessed and appropriate work equipment is selected
- The risks from fragile surfaces are properly controlled
- Equipment for work at height is properly inspected.
The course has a theory element looking at risk assessment, implementing relevant regulations , selecting appropriate means to access work at height & avoiding accidents. This is followed by a practical session using ladders where areas covered include equipment standards & specifications, pre-use checks, set-up ,safe use and packing up of the equipment.
This is a half day course that can be run in conjunction with manual handling to offer a full day's training for your staff Back to course list
