Those who use workshop tools need to be highly skilled in the use of the machinery they operate, to ensure that work is carried out to the best of their ability and in a safe and proper manner. Health and safety regulations require staff who operate machinery to have received appropriate training .

Abrasive wheels
The provision & use of work equipment regulations (PUWER) require employers to ensure that Abrasive Wheels are operated only by employees who have received training in their safe use. This is a half day course.

Safety in the use of gas cylinders
This course covers the use of Oxy-Acetylene, cutting, welding and brazing and when required Oxy-Propane cutting.
The HSE states that no-one should use oxy/fuel gas equipment without adequate training in
- the safe use of equipment
- the precautions to be taken
- the use of fire extinguishers
- the means of escape, raising the fire alarm and calling the fire brigade
The course also covers practical and safe use of the equipment.

Trailer brake maintenance
- The legal aspects of agricultural trailers on the road
- Identify different types of braking systems
- Checks to be made to systems to ensure safe operation
- Safe systems of working around trailers in the workshop
- Dismantle and check braking system, replace parts as necessary, reassemble and test for efficient operation

Tractor maintenance
This course is aimed at new entrants to the industry to give them a basic grounding in maintaining their vehicle.
- Daily maintenance & checks
- Routine maintenance as laid out in operators instruction book - filter/oil changes etc
- Ability to identify when dealer should be contacted
- Insight into how to spot problems early and therefore avoid major costs/hold ups

Tyre care
This is a half day course
- How to prevent premature tyre damage
- Maintain tyres at a pressure suited to the task in hand
- Identify tyre sizes, carcase ratings, speed ratings, load indices to ensure that tyres fitted to vehicles are suitable and legal
- The important factors with regard to tyre performance, such as how to create grip and increase it
- Compaction - the cause and how to reduce it
- Understanding manufacturers' reference sheets to obtain information on tyre pressures and load carrying capacities

Welding
The Group offers training in manual metal arc welding, MIG/MAG welding and oxy-acetylene cutting, welding and brazing. Over time trainees can be taken through a series of courses from beginners to improvers to training for those with advanced welding skills. To ensure that those on the course have the maximum amount of time for practical work numbers are limited to 3 per course Back to course list
